Many of today’s roofs incorporate design elements from around the world. If you’re planning for a new roof and need some design inspiration, read on as local roofing company Mass-Tech Roofing and Building Co. shares the most famous roofs from around the world.
1. Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia — The Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable roofs on the planet. It was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, was built in three stages of construction (the roof was built during the second stage) that spanned 13 years, and was formally opened in 1973. The unique shell-shaped design is made of over a million tiles, and is one of the earliest cases where structural analysis was performed using a computer. The Sydney Opera House has recently reopened to the public after a six-month shutdown due to COVID-19.
2. Domed Roofs, Santorini, Greece — Tourists flock to the hilltop town of Oia, located at the northern part of the island of Santorini, Greece, for its blue-domed churches. The combination of blue domes and white walls are thought to reflect the colors of the Greek flag. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, they serve a practical purpose: the dome shape allows wind to pass over them without creating structural pressure. On sloped roofs, this effect can be achieved by choosing a low slope—a feature worth asking your local roofer about.
3. Olympiapark, Munich, Germany — The Olympiapark München was constructed for the 1972 Summer Olympics, and continues to serve as a venue for cultural and social events. Seen from above, its roofing is unusual in that it looks like several tents, but it’s actually made of a lightweight material that fulfills all the functions of a roof. Walkways on the rooftop lead to the highest point of the Olympiapark Stadium. Tourists, aided by stadium staff, can zipline from the top.
4. Thean Hou Temple, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Despite the traditional design, the six-tiered Thean Hou Temple was completed in 1987 and became open to the public in 1989. It is considered as one of the largest temples in Southeast Asia. Its design incorporates imposing pillars, multi-colored roofs, and ornate carvings.
